    Escalating Global PFAS Bans Reshape the Industry Landscape

    2025 is set to become a turning point for the plastics industry. Under the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), PFAS will be comprehensively banned in food-contact materials. France has also introduced phased legislation to eliminate PFAS from textiles and cosmetics, with plans to fully prohibit fluorinated polymers. This environmental wave targeting so-called "forever chemicals" is forcing companies worldwide to accelerate the development of PFAS-free alternative materials.

    Core Processing Challenges of PFAS-Free Materials

    • Non-fluorinated flame retardants (such as phosphorus- and silicon-based systems) exhibit viscosities 30–50% higher than traditional fluorinated materials, making uniform dispersion difficult while increasing corrosiveness;

    • Bio-based flame retardants have a narrow processing window and are highly temperature-sensitive;

    • Mineral-based PFAS-free flame retardants impose extremely demanding wear-resistance requirements on screw elements.

    How Nanjing Lesun Screw Enables PFAS-Free Material Processing

    Specially designed high-dispersion screw elements ensure uniform distribution of non-fluorinated flame retardants. Elements manufactured from HIP-processed powder alloy materials are available, significantly extending service life under severe wear and corrosion conditions;

    • Cold roll–formed mandrels with torque capacity of 13–15 Nm/cm³ are compatible with high-torque twin-screw extruders, ensuring stable operation and meeting the high-viscosity processing demands of PFAS-free materials;

    • Bimetallic barrel structures with nickel-based alloy liners offer corrosion resistance 2–3 times higher than conventional nitrided steel under high-temperature conditions, substantially extending barrel service life. In addition, the annular cooling water channel design ensures temperature fluctuations of bio-based PFAS-free materials are controlled within ±1°C.
