Overview

Single key screw shafts utilize a keyed connection between the shaft and screw elements, enabling torque transmission through mechanical locking at the key interface.

This design provides a straightforward and cost-effective solution for systems with moderate torque requirements, while allowing flexible assembly and replacement of screw elements.

Due to the localized load distribution at the key interface, this configuration is best suited for applications with controlled torque and limited cyclic stress.

Key Features

Direct torque transmission through keyed interface
Simple structure for easy manufacturing and maintenance
Flexible machining for custom configurations
Cost-effective solution for moderate load systems

Design & Technical Insights

Torque is transmitted through a discrete key-slot interface, resulting in localized stress concentration.
This limits the torque capacity and fatigue resistance compared to spline-based designs. Proper fit tolerance and key material selection are critical to prevent wear and backlash.

Engineering Notes

Not suitable for high torque or high-speed applications
Requires precise fit to avoid fretting wear
Periodic inspection of key interface recommended
